First Workshop  „Historical Wood Utilization“

The workshop – organized by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences – BOKU, Vienna - took place at the Austrian Open Air Museum Stuebing from 23rd to 25th of September 2011. In total 45 people coming from 12 European countries attended this workshop. Various scientific fields were present (for example: wood science, dendrochronology, forestry, archaeology, ethnology, forest history, conservation). The scientific work of participants was presented by 17 posters. The content of the presentations varied between wood species selection, dendro-dating, oral history, wood and forest utilization and studying old literature. The poster-presentation was dominated by intensive discussions. The conclusion was, that there is a strong need for collaboration and that there are huge data sets available, which have to be brought to a joint analysis.

The main point of the workshop was to discuss questions of historical wood utilization and to set up a scientific community. The necessity of interdisciplinary research was obvious. Long discussions took place on the question “how to make historical wood utilization more visible”. Due to interdisciplinary it is often hard to publish and get recognized in different scientific fields. Studying the scope of journals, wood utilization is found rarely. A strong wish of the group was to get more possibilities to publish such results. Visibility of “Historical Wood Utilization” will be of high importance to get in contact with other research-groups for joint analyses.

The next steps were fixed. The network will come to closer contact, set up a web page. A following meeting is scheduled for September 2012 in Netherlands.

For the second workshop (September 28-30, 2012) contact Kirsti Hänninen.
